Even as we speak, the IPL juggernaut rolls on, NFL Combine gets candidates ready for the draft and Reebok just tries a XXX campaign as Coke puts over on all the radioactive social viral brands like P&G, Pepsi and more. They are all here. And it was all enabled by that Content Marketing System, the gem which is undoubtedly getting a rough deal in the market as a blogging platform.

What WordPress gives you, some times unknowingly, goes far beyond simple blogging and journo licences for day-bloggers. This piece of software and the linked Web partners are one up on the best in Online, digital media and offline conventional marketing engines. Also, WordPress is literally 10^6 ( A million times ) better in saving you from spam, digital advertising pots and the myriad scams that give the internet a bad name and make it a scammy, spammy non-live game..To be in tune with the social web must have been a constant race for that which started as a blogging engine, but they have done it and we must all make use of that to grow the web’s own franchise. It’s not just Facebook, It’s not just Facebook and Twitter but it ’s definitely Facebook, Twitter and WordPress and these are all tools you need to carry your trade, whatever that may be.

Come on in my kitchen | Advantage Brands

That song just played in my last.fm and it’s a song of the early blues before Chuck Berry and Beach Boys sparred to give us Rock n Roll at Cadillac! I am new to music history but this one will be a mouthful to most of you out there. The Muddy Waters movie was a revelation and I wolfed down every minute of it. I knew my love for Jazz and Blues and for Rock n Roll weren’t really oceans apart :)

Well I could use these titles on a lot of the come here start blogging posts that have the top of the tops sharing their blogging experience at problogger and some web ink now, but I guess i like marketing pilgrim, Advantage zyaada and our Social Networking and New Markets cause.

What we need however is get away from the tips and the dealmaking online and define a new spectrum of choice for online readers. Otherwise we will probably keep inventing more social networks and a Web 3.0 and a 4.0..

The Web is still not a commercial success. Even the crowdsourcing options and the live streaming videos are not going to go the mile like many Facebook and Twitter wannabes unless commercial success without resorting to extinct digital and search engine based business and advertising models is attained. Much more difficult than Nirvana and Your beer at the pub.. Did you know that pubs in the UK were making losses well into the nineties and some oughties as well!!

If you tour the business here, the posts are all starting points with some intermediate and final winning posts that open up commercial business and Business deals of gresat appeal for the webizens. While the web does provide a great deal today for the sincere researcher and the flippant young devil to brows, it needs some payback, which currently comes only in forms of ideas and not much in dollars even from big corporations. Online advertising and its CTM, CPC models may have grown and will grow, but they cannot be the mainstream for the web.

Why not advertising?

Well, because even if you look at scoring probabilities and models forweb marketing they show Content Marketing right up there leaving other web models in the distinctly invalid 2,3 and 4 Quadrants . As the only participant in the First Quadrant in Engagement vs Sentiment, content Marketing and the social media equivalent that is also content rich ( even on Twitter) the answer is more Sponsorships, content campaigns and longer partnerships than Tiger Woods or “Blogging pays for expenses” advertorials

Also, when analytics enter a rich design phase like ‘riight about now’ the stunning results from that on your marketing dashboard could mean adding multiple zeros to your 5% digital budget and even more for the social web.

It is your social experience, the work in business design that becomes obvious when youw write, and your brands’ message as you talk to its stakeholders that is far beyond crowdsourcing and tweeting just for the sake of tweeting..

Good to see Kobe and Yao Ming..Wait for the details as we figure out which brands are paying their earning potential. NBA sure has improved its take. In a couple of years, we will have the IPL franchise owners here…lol, maybe a coupls of athletes can start buying teams in April. Yao Ming has been through Nike, Reebok, Pepsi and was signed with Coca Cola till the Olympics. His current partnerships include Visa, Garmin, Apple and McDonalds.

Along with Jordan , Kobe also has shoes made for his franchise with Nike and carried $45m in 2009. In this second reincarnation he still supports Coca Cola company’s Vitamin Water franchise and does a lot of cover stuff for Video games like NBA2007 and “Guitar Hero World Tour”

Making IPL known across the pond | Advantage Brands

At this stage after the third season of IPL got underway with capped auctions, Media rights continued to take the limelight. At the start of the first edition of the sport, GEO Super in Pakistan and Willow TV in North America had bought media rights for the extravaganza internationally, SET paying $2 b for the 10 year contract. SET MAX has already made profit in the two editions past, and new Outdoor/theater rights were awarded to ESD and MSM bought some before for DTH. The Cola wars were played in he marketing theater, Coke on Air with TV Advertising and Pepsi on ground with MSM. Another word on the sponsorships gone by, Sony SET paid $2 billion while ESD pitched in with an additional $71 million.

Some of us thought that given the brand valuation riding two cliffs already, the third valuation cliff will bring direct benefice to the Franchisees. Again however, the League has stepped in, making it a rather well managed larger cake to share. Yes it’s Google You Tube and given the fracas regarding free feed available and the growing no. of broadband users in India, the Commonwealth and across the pond in US, it is time that IPLT20.com shared the traffic with someone like Google who can definitely manage.

Also we know from our marketing reviews that Online advertising has already been assigned a higher than 2-3 times of the 2007 budget in 2008 and 2009. For regular Cricket and IPL sponsors, that budget has now got a real value for money click at you tube. A streaming IPL telecast, stopped by 5 minutes over the live feed on TV has not cannibalised much in audience terms. Of the universe of 20 million Indian Households ( assuming a peak of 10% of our Market, for TRPs/GRPs/Planning) and another 5 million in other Cricket playing nations, very few would switch off the TV for watching it online. However another 5 million in the USA and maybe an equal number in the 100 odd ICC affiliates would now e able to access live IPL from work and home without resorting to educational and pleading campaigns to promote the game. The USA has obviously thought about Cricket T20 leagues domestically, and the same can be sold much better with a near live feed from the pilgrim’s home as it were.

That said, there were other inelegant reasons, that plagued IPL’s media presence.  Given the lesser budgets and the pressure to earn a tangible ROI, the first lot of advertisers would be a narrow set of new and committed brands. The Vodafone ZooZoos campaign took more than a year to come to IPL, Coke has designed a new campaign for the first time and Pepsi and Hero Honda were the other known brands in play earlier and would probably cross produce online ads as well. The smaller unknowns like Havells and Rajasthan Royals themselves have a unique opportunity to build something lasting, while teams would look to emulate the Royals in getting higher valuations and pawning off minor stakes in the team to build a reputation of positive brand valuation and a mean profit.

Two new teams right away

But enough of boring essays, the game deserves a quick repartee more than extremely long and broing writings and speeches right now. There would be many more chances to dice and slice the IPL’s universe of brands and media rights before we reach a stable set of teams, players and valuations.

The new teams would be more than willing to give a $300 million bid to get a team in IPL. I think the first ones were to be from Ahmedabad and probably Kanpur/Lucknow. Amar Singh would surely be around one of the teams in the latter case. The number of brand ambassadors and co-owners may be willing to lend a hand may not matter as there are only two teams this time around, with a purse that would easily reach $300 million for the franchise itself and only about $100 million from shared rights that Google would have paid coming in as defined revenues. It is a long term commitment and any serious brand missing the opportunity will not be able to come back in this short version of the game. Take out your chequebooks, gentlemen!

The few notes of caution

Some diplomacy would be hurt in each edition of the game with tangible and some larger intangible costs. NFL in its current form was worse off even after 80 years of the Sport and till the 60s. Here, the English, the Pakistani and the Aussies and the Boks would all feel like creating a turf to defend against this juggernaut. It would happen in some form or the other and has to be absorbed in the spirit of the game.

The other note of caution, the tangible returns of each such $1b in rights or $100 million in seasonal costs are not here yet. But they will come and projecting them should be very easy for the owners and the administrators. Also India is already bringing more than 85% of the money to the game of Cricket. The IPL is definitely tilting it into the nervous 90s. The new owners would need to bck it with real commitment and the ability to hold themselves from wasting too much of it on the wrong thing. Enough Said.

A new social branding effort for the Superbowl exit

The $20 million in prizes would be given out for ideas submitted here. The social effort Pepsi Refresh has been launched with prizes of more than $1 million every month across dozens of ideas selected from site submissions and prizes would replace the budgeted spend on their Superbowl ad. Definitely a new healthy beginning, though the Superbowl may not be out of fashion for long.
